Maritime IT & Satellite Connectivity

Satellite Connectivity (VSAT / LEO)

We design vessel satellite connectivity as a set of channels rather than a single link. VSAT, LEO and 4G/5G are combined with automatic failover, critical operational traffic is prioritised over crew usage, and data consumption is controlled and reported so monthly cost stays predictable and evidenced.

Who it is for

  • Vessels with continuous availability requirements
  • Fleets that want one data policy applied consistently
  • Offshore units transferring operational data ashore
  • Operators paying for satellite data with no visibility of usage

When we are NOT the right choice

  • If you only need commercial negotiation with a service provider
  • If traffic prioritisation is not acceptable to the operator
  • If the vessel network cannot support multiple channels

PROCESS

The process

Indicative times from signature of the proposal, subject to hardware availability. Every project is shaped to the size and the needs of the client.

  1. 01Requirements and traffic analysis

We separate critical operational traffic, reporting to shore, and crew usage, because each has a different tolerance for latency and loss.Time: 2-5 working daysDeliverable: Requirement profile per traffic type

  2. 02Multi-channel design

We define which channel serves what and in which order each takes over, so switchover happens without crew intervention.Time: Alongside the studyDeliverable: VSAT, LEO and 4G/5G design with priority order

  3. 03Priority and quota policies

Critical traffic always comes first. Crew usage is capped so it cannot exhaust the available data volume.Time: Alongside the studyDeliverable: QoS and consumption control policies

  4. 04Implementation and failover testing

We test switchover by deliberately dropping each channel, because failover that has never been tested is not failover.Time: 1-2 days on boardDeliverable: Verified automatic failover

  5. 05Monitoring and reporting

We monitor availability and consumption per channel, so decisions about data plans are based on evidence rather than assumption.Time: Ongoing, under agreementDeliverable: Availability and consumption reporting

  • VSAT
  • 4G / 5G routers with failover
  • MikroTik RouterOS
  • QoS

From practice

The question almost always arrives as a choice between two technologies. In practice the real question is different: what must keep working when the primary channel drops, and who decides at the moment it happens.

If the answer is "the crew, manually", then availability has not been designed. That is why we test switchover by deliberately dropping each channel before we hand the project over.

Prerequisites

  • An existing vessel network, or its inclusion in the project
  • Active subscriptions on the channels to be combined
  • A work window for failover testing
  • A decision on crew usage limits

Cost

We do not publish a price list. Every proposal follows a site survey and separates hardware from labour.

Frequently asked questions

VSAT or LEO?

In practice this is not a choice. LEO offers lower latency and higher throughput, VSAT a different coverage and stability profile. Combining them with automatic failover is what produces real availability.

How is data cost controlled?

Through quotas and priorities. Critical operational traffic always takes precedence, while crew usage is capped so it cannot exhaust the available volume. Consumption is monitored and reported.

How fast is switchover?

Switchover is automatic and designed so critical sessions recover without crew intervention. We verify it by deliberately dropping each channel before handover.

Do I need to change provider?

Not necessarily. We design around the channels you already hold and add what is missing. The proposal concerns architecture, not your commercial relationship with a provider.

NEXT STEP

Design your vessel connectivity

We analyse what each traffic type actually needs and propose a channel combination with automatic failover and controlled cost.
